Elegy was written by James for the pianist Niklas Oldemeier. Despite the virtuosity and textural variety demanded by this work, all of the material is in fact derived from a simple harmonic sequence in A minor, the elegiac quality of which influenced the work’s title. Key to the development of this material is an exploration of speed; how the speed at which something is heard impacts out perception of it. Material is stretched and contracted to create highly differentiated, seemingly unrelated, musical textures. There is no attempt to synthesise these many ideas, rather, they are juxtaposed to form a musical montage, illuminating their shared ancestry, yet maintaining their immutable differences. James is very grateful to Niklas for this wonderful recording from a performance at the Latvian Embassy in 2017.
