James was involved in an exciting project celebrating the music of British and Armenian composers. Organised to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Britain and Armenia, the project involved James composing a new work for Soprano and Piano, which was premiered at the Komitas Museum Institute, Yerevan in 2017. The work sets fragments of text from Armenian poet Yegishe Charents’ Rubaiyats to create a single text meditating upon the theme of ‘change’. The recording above is from the premiere; the soprano is Sofya Sayadyan and the pianist is Arpine Kalinina – the artistic director of this project and a fellow composer.
Following on from this initial project, James was asked to compose another song based upon the poetry of Yegishe Charents. Based upon Charents’ poem ‘Invisible Guests’, the song was premiered in 2018. The recording below is from this premiere with tenor Berj Karazian and pianist Arpine Kalinina.
