James participated in the 2019 edition of Psappha Ensemble’s ‘Composing For’ scheme. Every year the Manchester-based new music ensemble invites composers to create original pieces for the ensemble’s players and, this year, James chose to write for the combination of piano and percussion. Amalgam developed over a series of workshops with the ensemble’s players before a final recording session. The finished piece explores the physicality of this instrumental combination through a highly gestural and rhythmically intense musical language.
